Challenge
IPTO, Greece’s electricity transmission operator, needed to develop a comprehensive Digital Strategy aligned with ENTSO-E’s digital roadmap and European best practices. This strategy would guide its evolution over the next decade, ensuring innovation, efficiency, and resilience in an increasingly digital energy landscape. This initiative aimed to lay the foundation for IPTO’s transformation into a Digital TSO, leveraging advanced digital technologies to enhance operations, security, and data-driven decision-making.
Approach
The project was structured as a collaborative effort, delivered in partnership with AD Little Belgium. The approach included:
Digital Landscape & Alignment with ENTSO-E: The first phase focused on assessing IPTO’s current digital maturity and capabilities, identifying gaps in infrastructure, governance, and processes. A critical part of this assessment involved benchmarking against ENTSO-E’s digital framework, ensuring that IPTO’s future roadmap would be fully aligned with European best practices.
Digital Strategy Development & Roadmap:In the second phase, the focus shifted to defining a clear Digital Vision for the next decade and developing a structured roadmap for implementation. This included prioritizing key areas such as cybersecurity, automation, data analytics, and cloud solutions, while also ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks and seamless integration with European energy markets. The strategy aimed to create a step-by-step plan for digital transformation, positioning IPTO at the forefront of innovation in the sector.
Workshops & Collaboration: The project organised eight dedicated workshops, bringing together key stakeholders to shape the strategy through interactive discussions, expert insights, and iterative refinement. These sessions ensured alignment across technical, operational, and regulatory dimensions.
IPTO’s Digital Strategy sets the foundation for a secure, efficient, and future-ready power transmission network.
Results & Impact
By developing a clear Digital Strategy, IPTO is now positioned to:
- Accelerate its transformation into a fully digital TSO.
- Improve operational efficiency, data management, and cybersecurity.
- Align seamlessly with ENTSO-E’s digital strategy and European market requirements..
Through strategic planning and collaboration, IPTO is taking a decisive step toward a digitalized, efficient, and future-ready power transmission system that will support Greece’s energy transition and long-term sustainability goals.
