New Project: Safeguarding Turkiye's Wetlands and Coasts

We are proud to announce that PLANET, in consortium with PLANET Turkey and international partners, has signed the contract for a new EU-funded project titled “Assessment of Climate Change Impacts on Lakes, Wetlands and Coastal Areas in Türkiye.” The project is funded by the European Union and implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change of the Republic of Türkiye.

The project aims to strengthen Türkiye’s resilience to climate change by increasing adaptation capacity in its most vulnerable ecosystems—its coasts, wetlands, and lakes. Covering the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts and three iconic sites—Köyceğiz-Dalyan (Muğla), Nemrut (Bitlis), and Eğirdir (Isparta)—the project will deliver advanced modelling of climate impacts, comprehensive risk assessments, and targeted adaptation strategies. Its findings will guide national and local authorities in developing nature-based solutions and sustainable management plans aligned with EU climate and environmental policy.

Beyond its scientific scope, the project focuses on capacity building, equipping Turkish institutions and municipalities with the knowledge and tools needed to address climate-driven risks such as sea-level rise, salinization, and ecosystem degradation. Adaptation handbooks, training programmes, and coastal vulnerability maps will support evidence-based decision-making and long-term planning.

By leading this initiative, PLANET reaffirms its strong commitment to climate resilience and environmental governance, while PLANET Turkey continues to play an instrumental role in implementing complex donor-funded reform and infrastructure projects across the region. Together, they contribute to Türkiye’s efforts to align with EU environmental standards and foster a sustainable, climate-ready future.
